RH Gamut Analyzer DCTL – Professional Color Monitoring Tool
The RH Gamut Analyzer is a sophisticated statistical analysis tool designed for DaVinci Resolve. Unlike traditional scopes that show you where pixels fall in color space, this tool tells you exactly what those colors are mathematically. By combining spatial sampling, luminance gating, and saturation gating into a single real-time probe, it allows for precise, data-driven color matching and technical quality control. It acts as a "smart probe," ignoring shadows and highlights to give you the pure average saturation of the six primary hue vectors (RGBCMY) within a specific area of your image.
Key Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Spatial "Smart Probe" Sampling | Analyze specific areas of your frame (e.g., skin tones, product packaging, or landscapes) using a customizable on-screen sample box. |
| Luminance & Saturation Gating | The analyzer filters out pixels that don't matter. By setting Luma and Saturation thresholds, you can exclude deep shadows, clipped highlights, or neutral grays from the calculation, ensuring your data isn't skewed by the background or lighting conditions. |
| Real-Time Statistical Readout | Instantly see the average saturation values for Red, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, and Magenta within your selected range. |
| 6-Bin Hue Sorting | The tool automatically sorts every valid pixel in the sample area into the nearest primary or secondary color bin, providing a breakdown of color purity that standard eyedroppers cannot achieve. |
Controls Overview
| Category | Control | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Sampling Controls | Position X / Y | Moves the crosshair/sample box across the frame. |
| Sample Box Size | Adjusts the size of the analysis area (from a small spot probe to a large regional scanner). | |
| Show Sample Box | Toggles the visual overlay of the analysis area. | |
| Qualifiers (The "Gate") | Luma Low / High | Defines the brightness range to analyze. Pixels darker or brighter than these thresholds are ignored. |
| Display Settings | Text Size | Scales the HUD overlay for better readability on different monitor resolutions. |
| Background Dim | Dims the image behind the text to ensure the data is legible against bright footage. |
Installation
-
Download: Download the
.dctlfile. -
Locate Folder: Open DaVinci Resolve. Go to File > Open File Location > LUT Folder.
-
Install: Create a folder named "RenderHub" (optional but recommended) and paste the
.dctlfile there. -
Refresh: Restart DaVinci Resolve or right-click in the LUTs panel and select "Refresh."
-
Apply: In the Color Page, find the DCTL under the DaVinci CTL section of your Effects Library and drag it onto a node.
Recommended Workflow
-
Shot Matching: When matching a reverse angle, place the sample box over the subject's face in the reference shot. Adjust the Luma/Sat Gates to isolate only the skin tone (excluding the dark shadow side or bright highlights). Note the Red and Yellow saturation values. Apply the tool to your current shot and adjust your grade until the numbers match.
-
Product Color QC: Place the box over a brand-critical element (like a Coca-Cola can). Use the Sat Low gate to ignore reflections/glare. The readout will give you an objective saturation value for the Red channel, ensuring consistency across the timeline.
-
Film Emulation Analysis: Use the tool to analyze reference film scans. By scanning different density regions (shadows vs. midtones), you can mathematically map how the film stock compresses or desaturates specific hues as they get darker or brighter.
