RH MidControl PRO DCTL – The Ultimate Contrast & Exposure Engine

Shape Contrast with Mathematical Precision & Predictive Metering

If you have worked as a Colorist or DI artist, you know that shaping contrast is only half the battle—maintaining signal integrity and exposure precision is the other. Standard tools require you to visually guess where your mid-tones land after a heavy grade. RH MidControl PRO bridges the gap between artistic contrast shaping and technical exposure management.

It combines the smooth Hermite S-Curve engine of the standard version with a real-time Densitometer and Predictive Math Engine. Now, you don’t just feel the contrast; you calculate exactly where your Middle Gray will land, verify your curve geometry with an on-screen ramp, and probe your image values without disrupting your grade. It is designed for colorists who need total control over their signal pipeline.

Key Features

Feature Description
Predictive Math Engine (CAL) Automatically calculates exactly where your reference gray (e.g., 33.6 DWG) will land after your curve adjustments—before you even look at the scopes.
Real-Time Exposure Metering Instantly reads the average exposure of your full frame, with built-in Exposure Check offsets (-1 / 0 / +1 Stop) to verify lighting ratios.
Dual-Mask System Features two distinct visualization modes:
Green Mask (Input): Visualizes your Grading Pivot (Mid Point).
Red Mask (Output): A decoupled "Probe" tool to find specific values (like 18% gray) in the final image without changing the grade.
Spatial Spot Meter (SPOT)

A moveable X/Y crosshair that acts as a post-grade densitometer. It measures the exact output IRE of any specific pixel, allowing you to track exposure changes across multiple nodes.

Visual Curve Ramp 📉 A grayscale gradient overlay at the bottom of the frame shows the exact geometry of your S-Curve, helping you spot crushed blacks or clipped whites instantly.
Custom Pivot & Independent Curves Target specific tonal zones (Skin, Sky, Shadows) with independent Shadow/Highlight S-Curves that maintain natural roll-off.
GPU-Accelerated & Non-Destructive Floating-point precision designed specifically for DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Controls Overview

Control Function
MID_POINT Sets the tonal boundary (Pivot) where shadows meet highlights. This is the anchor for your contrast curve.
SHADOWS / HIGHLIGHTS CURVE Independently lift or deepen tonal areas below or above the pivot with smooth, filmic roll-off.
BLACK / WHITE POINT The anchors for your dynamic range. Slide to lift/crush blacks or expand/protect highlights.
COLOR SPACE MID GRAY Input your working color space standard (e.g., 33.6 for DWG/LogC3, 40.0 for Rec.709). This calibrates the math engine.
SPOT POSITION X/Y

Toggles the visual crosshair overlay. When enabled, it adds a SPOT readout to the text display.

SHOW SPOT CROSSHAIR Instantly offset the metering by -1, 0, or +1 Stop. Useful for checking if a face is exactly 1 stop over/under key.
CHECK MIDDLE GRAY (Probe) A dedicated slider to "search" for values in your image. Connected to the Red Mask, it lets you verify if a specific area hits your target value (e.g., 18% gray).
SHOW CURVE RAMP 📉 Toggles a grayscale strip at the bottom of the frame. Use this to visually inspect the smoothness of your curve and ensure no data is being clipped.
SHOW TEXT INFO Displays real-time data on screen:
AVG: Measured Full-Image Average.
MID: Your current Pivot setting.
CAL: The theoretical output of your reference gray.
VAL: The value of your Probe slider.

Installation

  1. Copy RH_MidControl_PRO_v27.dctl to your Resolve DCTL folder:

    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Fusion/DCTL/

    • Windows: %AppData%\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion\DCTL\

  2. Restart DaVinci Resolve.

In the Color page, find it under Effects Library > Color > DCTL.

Recommended Workflow

  1. Set Reference: Set Color Space Mid Gray to your timeline standard (e.g., 33.6).

  2. Shape Contrast: Adjust Mid Point and Curves to achieve your look.

  3. Check Integrity: Enable Show Curve Ramp to ensure your gradients are smooth and not clipping.

  4. Verify Exposure: Use the Check Middle Gray slider + Red Mask to confirm your gray card or skin tones are landing exactly where the CAL readout predicts.

  5. Multi-Node Tracking (External): To verify exposure after complex grading (HDR wheels, etc.), use the Spot Position to place the crosshair on your reference chart. The SPOT readout will tell you the final output value, regardless of what other nodes have done.
  6. Final Polish: Disable masks and text before rendering.

RH MidControl PRO transforms your grading node into a precision instrument—giving you the confidence that your artistic choices are backed by mathematical accuracy.
