The Sony’s latitude with the blues and its red leaning towards magenta worked surprisingly well for us to get this look. The inspiration for this comes from the Kodak Ektachrome looks with a warm bias and rich colors.

Getting those red to play well with the blues in the overall warm setting was a challenge using Resolve’s native tools, the RH Filmic Colors architecture handles this challenge with ease, this shot was graded only and entirely using the RH Filmic Colors DCTL.

Another interesting property we can notice from the DCTL’s working is how elegant the highlight roll off is. On comparing it with the 709 image it is immediately visible how native tools struggle with highlights and in a broader sense how they struggle with a contrast adjustments beneath a transfer curve and also under a tone mapping function. Our DCTL handles it in true film like fashion, modelling how linear light interacts with chemical dyes.
